Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a strong showing for much of the GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway before an unscheduled pit stop dropped him to a 20th-place finish.

Racing a sleek blue Chevrolet sporting Mountain Dew’s new Dew-S-A drink, Earnhardt made steady progress throughout the night, climbing into the top 20 early on. By the end of Stage 1, the No. 88 was scored 23rd.

Crew chief Greg Ives continued making adjustments that helped the handling of Earnhardt’s Chevrolet as he vaulted from 29th to 18th in the opening laps of Stage 2. Earnhardt climbed his way to 16th for a restart at lap 106 and found himself in the top 10 by the race’s next caution at lap 137. After another pit stop, Earnhardt slipped all the way to 17th and recovered two of the lost positions to end Stage 2 in 15th.

Earnhardt raced his way to the top 10 again in the final stage before reporting that he had a bad vibration, which was a recurring theme of the night. Despite the reports, he continued to pass cars and was positioned for a strong position when he made an unscheduled pit stop at lap 237 for the vibration.

After losing a lap while making the green-flag pit stop, Earnhardt was able to rejoin the lead lap late in the race and finished the race 20th.

Martin Truex Jr. captured his second win of the season over Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch.
